Lay It All Out There

"Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you." Jeremiah 29:12 NIV

How do we learn to pray? Many of us question whether we are doing it right. It may seem insignificant to talk to God about the trivial details of our lives, but this is exactly what He wants. C. S. Lewis advises us to "lay before Him what is in us, not what ought to be in us." Our prayers should not feel forced; they should be a safe space for our true selves. Prayer allows us to bring everything before Him - our doubts, anxieties, relationships, and everyday struggles. We are known and seen in our vulnerability, even if God was already aware of it all.

If we hesitate to share our honest thoughts with God, it implies that we think they don't matter to Him or that He can't change them. But if we don't believe He can intervene in the mundane, why would we invite Him into the extraordinary?

How does a child learn to have a conversation? They talk. How do we learn to talk to God? We speak to Him and we listen. Prayer nurtures our spiritual growth, allowing us to reflect God's radiance. We learn more about the One who made us and point to heaven through our communication with Him.

Let's not be discouraged by the very means that bring us to His feet. If we struggle to desire to pray, that itself is a prayer. Transformation is all-encompassing. We do not need an elaborate way to pray or a pristine past to be heard by Jesus. The proper way to pray to God is simply to pray.

Let's find peace in hiding nothing from Him. Let's pray.

Hey Jesus, thank You for listening to my prayers, big and small. Help me fix my eyes on You and learn Your heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
